If Sherlock Holmes was a Ballet

Thinking back on the inspiration for the wool garments in the Tough Love Collection, it stretched from just about every tangent one could imagine. Though all of the looks have common roots, they have very specific inspirations.

Generalization: most little girls are obsessed with ballet; if not then we were totally fascinated with the tutu alone!

When I was young, my love for tutus facilitated an easy transfer of obsession from one ridiculously short skirt to another; hence the parallel preoccupation with cheerleader uniforms and tennis skirts. But it was the 80's and you didn’t have to have to be the least bit active to indulge in fashion reminiscent of active wear; nor did you need an excuse to wear a short skirt.

Fast-forward three decades later to my Fashion Marketing class at El Centro. Kevin, my professor was pretty cool, but alas, he too had an obsession: London. Specifically Savile Row. We talked bespoke tailoring, architecture, dirty streets and grey skies until I was officially hooked. Honestly, he had had me at ‘grey skies’; and now all I wanted to do was design a tailored grey wool “something” that would speak to the cliché idea of what classic London fashion was but with a modern twist. However, that was only an idea; I didn’t have a great vision yet.

And then there was the movie Sherlock Holmes… what Kevin had started, Sherlock pushed over the edge.

I walked out of the theater in a daze. The structure of the men’s jackets, the wools, and the excess of clothing and accessories that seemed to serve no functional purpose fueled my desire to make a collection that was reminiscent of that time period and complimentary to the feminine form.

The marriage of all these elements from different aspects of my life produced a great garment, aptly named ‘Angel’ because it was truly the muse and guide for all of the wools in the collection; also because of the winged effect on the back straps.

When my brother first saw the finished sample he commented, “… if Sherlock Holmes was a ballet….” A girl can only hope, Baby Bro!
